Introduced into the Olympics in 1972, The World Championships in 1983, The European Championships 1969 and The Commonwealth Games in 1934. In the Commonwealth between 1934-1950 it was run over 660 yards, 220 yards x 220 x 110 yards x 110 yards. It was reintroduced back in 1974 as the 4 x 400 metres.
